Writing Numeric Expressions for Multiplication and Division
Multiplication is a quick way of adding the same number
over and over again. So, word problems that ask you to repeatedly
add or combine a particular number or amount
are multiplication problems.
Example: Precilla found 6 white rocks. Brenda
found 3 times as many. How many white rocks did Brenda find?
Division is a way of breaking up numbers into as many smaller parts of
equal size as possible. Word problems that ask you to find equal
portions or shares of a total are division problems.
Example: Jana had 48 pieces of candy. If she
put 8 pieces into each bag, how many bags did she need?
