Tenzin's early experiences at the Sera monastery seemed to confirm his (reputation) as the reincarnated holy leader. The monks said he looked remarkably like his predecessor--Geshe Jatze. Tenzin learned to speak the Tibetan language in just a few months and proved (adept at) memorizing complicated religious texts. He also mastered the (time-honored) tradition of Buddhist debate. (In the shelter of) his hilltop monastery, Tenzin meditated, searching his mind for the truth: Was he really a (reborn) spirit? Some small part of him feared it was all a (hoax). Buddhist philosophy encourages skepticism. It is one of the Buddha’s teachings.
“The Buddha always said, ‘Don't take what I say as pure gold. Pure gold, if you cut it, it stays gold all through and you have to, um, to know if it's, if it's true, analyze it, (put it into practice), try it, see if it's true. If it's not, then don't take my advice and don't pray to me’.” To Tibetan Buddhists, (reincarnation) is as evident as the stars and the moon. Much as westerners have studied the frontiers of outer space, Tibetan scholars have studied the frontiers of the human mind. They have (systematically) analyzed the death process since the 7th century A.D. They claim they have thousands of documented cases of people's past life memories. These cases, they say, (are proof that the human soul is an energy source that survives even after the body expires).
“It is a (scientific) belief, certainly. They believe they've explored and (investigated) this (realm), that they have personally experienced, to this, this realm and remember their transitions through this realm, and therefore they sort of have experimental (evidence) by reliable, reported by reliable researchers (as far as they are concerned).”
After five years of intense study in India, Tenzin was (convinced) he was the reincarnated spirit of Jatze. But Tenzin felt he would be more (approachable as a layperson and better able to fulfill his purpose) in the West. With the blessing of the Dalai Lama, he relinquished his vows and returned to a western lifestyle. Tenzin moved to Paris, where he began studying philosophy. He is a typical westerner, spending time with his wife, working on his computer, and playing hockey (on weekends). He blends right in. Tenzin says he still feels a deep connection to his past life as an (enlightened) Buddhist monk. He hopes to teach one day at a western university. In that way, (he feels he can pass on his knowledge), his wisdom and fulfill his Karma as a holy man. Vocabulary: adept at: 熟练于… She's adept at growing roses. karma: In religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, karma is the belief that your actions in this life affect all your future lives.
